This article will show you how to easily back up and restore your Chrome bookmarks using simple HTML files that you can store on a USB drive, network-attached storage, or the web.

How to Back Up Chrome Bookmarks

If you don’t have a Google account and want to save a copy of your bookmarks to your hard drive, network, or USB drive, follow these steps.

NOTE: If you have a Google account, your bookmarks are automatically saved in the cloud. Log in to the same Google account on a different device, then open Chrome, to restore your bookmarks.

1- In the upper-right corner of the Chrome window, locate and select the three vertical dot icons.

2- Locate Bookmarks in the resulting drop-down menu.

3- Choose Bookmark Manager.

Hint: You also can access the Bookmark Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+O.

4- Then choose Export bookmarks from the three-dot button to the right of the blue bar across the bookmarks tab.

5- Chrome launches a new window in which you can navigate to the location where you want to save your backup. Choose a position on your computer, give the backup file a name, and then click Save.

Hint: You can save your bookmarks to a USB drive or a networked storage device if you have one connected to your computer. You can also keep bookmarks in a folder that syncs with a cloud storage service, such as Dropbox.

6- After you follow these, your backup will now be safely stored in the location you specified. When you’re ready, you can import that backup into another Chrome installation or another browser.

NOTE: Other browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox, can import your Chrome HTML files, making it easier than ever to share and move your bookmark library. We demonstrate how.

How to Get Your Chrome Bookmarks Restore

The process for restoring bookmarks from a lost Chrome installation is also simple. Here’s how to go about it:

1- Use the instructions above to navigate to the bookmarks tab or press Ctrl+Shift+O on the keyboard. Chrome instantly opens the tab.

2- Choose Import bookmarks from the three dots in the upper-right corner.

3- Chrome launches a file browser. Locate and select your backup HTML file, then click Open to import your bookmarks.

4- Chrome starts importing your saved bookmarks. Your bookmarks should be categorized where they belong if your backup was from Chrome.

Hint: Other browser bookmarks may end up in the Other bookmarks section. After you import bookmarks, you can move them around as you see fit.
